Neither. You join a LEC through the connection point: it is the meter that qualifies, not the deed. In a rental the electricity is usually billed in your name, and the saving is then yours and not your landlord's. Most LEC members have no panels of their own: they buy the electricity from those who do. How much does it cost? Creating your profile and matchmaking are free. WattMatch takes a transparent commission on the energy exchanged within the LEC. Will I end up paying more for my electricity? No, never. This isn't a marketing promise, it's arithmetic: your LEC price is your DSO's price minus a discount, so at worst the same, never higher. The 20 to 40% network rebate required by law comes on top, and your current supply contract doesn't change. WattMatch only wins when you win: our commission is capped at 2 ct/kWh and taken from the community's margin, never added to your bill. How is it possible that everyone benefits? Because Distribution Network Operators (DSOs), responsible for operating, maintaining and modernising the local electricity grid that carries power to consumers, have been legally required, since 2026, to grant LEC members a discount of 20 to 40%. Is there really that much surplus solar to share? Yes, and far more often than people imagine. Production peaks at midday and in summer, exactly when local demand is at its lowest, and the forecast regularly errs in the right direction. Since this electricity can't be stored, it has to be consumed the moment it is produced, otherwise it flows back to the grid at a low feed-in tariff, sometimes nil. The 20 to 40% network rebate exists precisely for that: to make it worth a neighbour's while to consume it at that exact moment. Do I need to switch providers? No. You stay with your current distributor. The LEC works alongside your existing contract. Does sharing electricity with my neighbours require any building work? No. The connection already exists: a LEC runs over your DSO's public grid, with no new cable and no changes to the meters in place. What is new is joining forces and measuring the exchanges every quarter hour via the smart meter. You can in fact join a LEC now and install panels later: the two are independent. Is it legal in Switzerland? Yes. LECs have been governed by Swiss legislation (the Federal Electricity Supply Act) since January 2026. WattMatch ensures full legal compliance. I live in a condominium (PPE) or an apartment building, does this work? Yes, in both set-ups. If each flat has its own metering point, each owner joins in their own name and the solar installation gets one or more production metering points of its own. If the building is already a self-consumption grouping (ZEV), it has a single metering point and joins the LEC as one entity. In a condominium, the step to anticipate isn't the connection but the owners' general meeting decision: the roof is a common part. What happens if I move?
