What is solar surplus?
In the middle of the day a solar roof produces more than the house uses. Until now that surplus went back to the grid, sold at a low price.
The change since 2026
Local Electricity Communities (LEC) create the legal framework to sell that surplus to neighbours on the same local grid: the neighbourhood, the village, the town.
Why it's cheaper
Your bill doesn't just pay for electricity: a good share covers the grid. Power that stays in the neighbourhood uses it less, hence a rebate on that share.

Indicative estimate: exact amounts depend on your distributor and the roofs in your neighbourhood.
Where these comparisons come from
CO₂: compared with the Swiss consumption mix (90 g CO₂eq/kWh, AES 2025), against 36 g for Swiss rooftop solar over its full life cycle. If your electricity is already certified hydro or solar, the gap is smaller. Car: Swiss fleet average over the full life cycle (0.339 kg CO₂eq/km, KBOB 2022). Shower: 45 litres (5 minutes) heated from 12 to 40 °C electrically, i.e. 1.47 kWh.All of solar, without the downsides.

Your virtual panel's electricity gets a rebate on network use. Since 2026 the law has required your distribution system operator (DSO) to grant it.
